Diamondbacks 2005 Payroll
With all the talk on yesterday's entry on the D-Backs' payroll, I thought I would publicly list what I'm assuming. These are my best guesses based on what I've read; like Ryan, I've assumed that minor leaguers will make $50K and major leaguers without a specific contract are making $350K. This will overstate the payroll by maybe $2 million since some (5-7) of the $350K guys won't be on the 25-man roster come April. I'm including Randy's $6 M in deferred salaries, though who knows if the D-Backs are when they talk about "payroll" -- in any case, doing so means we're making the roster as expensive as it can be described (I'd rather be pleasantly than unpleasantly surprised).
I'd like your comments -- consider this an "open source" payroll effort that I'll modify if I've messed up. And thanks to Dugout Dollars, without whose D-Backs page this couldn't have been done (though I've felt free to modify… like by giving every major leaguer a flat $350,000, since we're talking about 2005 anyway).
The first thing you notice when looking at Arizona's 40-man roster is that they've listed 41 players. Now, I think because Ortiz and Counsell haven't technically signed, I think they're in the clear. (They may be waiting until they non-tender or trade Hillenbrand before taking further action.)
Grand Total? $55,965,000. Remember, that includes $6 M of deferred salary for Randy, $2.75 M for Shea, and $2 M or so in salaries staff won't get when they're not on the 25-man roster. But it's still somewhat higher than I expected… but maybe that's because I thought their payroll was $73 M, but I've seen reported as high as $77 M.

Comments:
Well, you and I started from the same place (source), so our numbers are bound to be dang close. The only meaningful differences I found:
Johnson - I do not include the deferred amount in his current salary, although I have no idea how the organization handles this when it comments publicly about payroll numbers. But here's the other thing of which I have lost track - how many other deferred payments are still floating around out there? I am pretty sure Schilling's numbers are still 'hot.' I don't think Finley had any deferreds. But Bell and Williams did, didn't they? Are they paid? Do you know where we could dig that up because I'd like to add to the payroll any '05 payments due.
Glaus - signing bonus was, as I understand it, $4mmm spread over four years. So I have $1mm more in salary than you show. (apologies for not having the link to a source, but I am thinking it was via Rotoworld.)
Hillenbrand - I have nothing down for him. Until the organization takes some kind of action, I don't think we know what to plug in for him, if anything. And yes, I agree with you that he is the "41st Man".
Other than that, I think you and I are pretty much in agreement.
Stephen

BTW - just read a levski post on Primer wondering about AZ losing interest in Hairston defensively at 2B - but having never seen him play. I presume you have seen him play, Stefan. I saw him in Fall Ball last year and plenty this past summer. The guy is lost out there.
I find that almost impossible to believe, being a third-generation major leaguer as he is. How is it possible that you grow up in such a deeply-entrenched MLB family and not have any baseball instincts whatsoever? Maybe I am being to harsh on the guy, but goodness - he looks to me like the proverbial stellar athlete who JUST started playing baseball. NOT someone who grew up around it and played it his whole life. All of which makes me wonder if he can play an adequate level of defense at ANY position. The guy can hit - there is little doubt about that. But c'mon, we aren't talking George Bell here. I don't see him being very valuable as a DH-only.
Anyway, someone pass along to levski that Hairston's "D" is as bad (or worse) as the organization intimates. I would welcome a Hillenbrand/Hairston trade for something of value - be it another solid arm or a quality CF/RFer.
