Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

7-1 the D-Backs led in yesterday's game when it all went south. Marquis
Grissom fouled a ball of his foot with the bases loaded, but, as Stephen
Randolph approached his 100th pitch, he worked it to a full count and....
grand slam. Sigh. Somehow you had the sinking feeling that the D-Backs
were going to find some way to lose the game. And sure enough they did, as
Koplove and Aquino, who'd had such a good month, conspired to give away 4
runs in the bottom of the 8th, thereby allowing the Giants to escape with a
9-7 win.

I don't have much to add at this point -- creativity a casualty of the march
toward 100 losses and beyond -- but from what I saw and heard of Friday's
and yesterday's game, I can understand Pedrique's frustration with the
umpiring crew. Terrero's catch in the bottom of the 1st inning Friday night
ruled a trapped ball (Terrero will learn to act like he caught the ball even
if he doesn't) opened the floodgates (though clearly Gonzalez didn't have
his best stuff). And there were other instances yesterday (e.g., Snyder
being called on a phantom 3rd-strike swing) that made an already defeated
D-Backs squad feel more deflated.

Randy Johnson must have been watching the past couple games, thinking to
himself, "You know, with those 14 runs scored, I probably could've won
another 4 or 5 games." I would like nothing better than to have the
floodgates open on the D-Backs' behalf -- the team (and its fans) could use
something like that.
